Columns in Construction

I build industrial, commercial, residential buildings in starting of my career but never see column construct after brick wall but when i decided to get the all rounder(independently look after every work at site) i.e. structure, materials, labour, estimate and costing, plumbing, electrical, tiles work or you can say handles all the work based on my future plans.

There i notice many contractor first build brick wall and then construct column, first i resist it but then i get to know the real reason behind this

Many people ask which is the best method to construct a column

1.First Brick work then Column

2.First Column then brickwork

in this i will talk about both types in details and after reading this you will get to own by your own that which one is best

But remember one thing if you have any questions regarding this or other construction related work then feel free to contact us

Lets first talk about

1.First Brick Work and then Column:

When you first build wall and here i am talking about load bearing wall and after that you have two sides and sometimes 3 sides of column already build wall and only one side remaining so now you just need one side to be covered to cast the column which saves many things which explains below

1.Shuttering: only one or two side of shuttering is needed which makes the shuttering cost low

2.Time: time will save as only one side to be covered remaining

3.Labour: Less labour needed

4.Support: less support needed while pouring concrete into the column as 2 sides are already covered and not need any support

5.Bond: the bond between column and brickwall will be greater than normal

6.Murga Jali: No need of murga jali as the bond already occur so no negligence chance of cracks between column and brick wall

Disadvantages:

1.Less Strength

2.Low load bearing capacity of column

3.Difficult in curing of column as bricks will suck the water from the column so it will needed to curing proper

4.Greater chances of honeycomb

2.First Column and then Brick wall:

This is the verified construction of column by Indian Standard but from my point of experience i can say if you are building a frame structure where there in beams provided from column to column such that the slab load transfer to the beam and then column and then footing then these types of columns are best.

Advantages:

1.Greater Strength

2.Better Finishing

3.High load bearing capacity

4.Can be curing perfectly

Disadvantages:

1.Cracks between column and wall

2.shuttering : cost increase

3.Labour:more labour+time will be increase

4.Murga jali: need to install murga jali between column and wall
